Study On Female Images In Zhang Ping’s Novels

His short story Sacrifice my Wife which was written in1980s aroused great responses in the literary world. Then he had created a series of rural novels which regarded the females as the main body and elaborated women’s fate. Since1990s, Zhang Ping has changed his literary subject from family theme to politics and society theme. He gives priority to political realistic novel, namely officialdom novel. In his male texts in which men star, he still shapes the images of women of that era. From his early works to later writings, the change of female image and its implicit meaning deserve our thought. A majority of domestic scholars take his literary works as a typical example of china political realistic novel. They concern his political novel’s artistic feature, aesthetic personality and narrative strategy. Moreover, they regard his novels as a case to study and analyze unique aesthetic and ideological characteristics of his novels. However, they pay no attention to female image of his novels. Therefore, this thesis observes female images under the description of Zhang Ping from the perspective of feminism. It makes a targeted analysis of works surrounding this theme. In this thesis, I will analyze them from three parts.In the first part, Zhang Ping mainly overviews the types and features of female images in family affliction novel series in his earlier period. Although Zhang Ping is a male intellectual, he shows sympathy for working women of low level and writes a lot of female novels from the stance of women. In the meantime, he shapes a series of female images possessing the unworldliness over that era and unique features. Compared with the scar literature and reflection literature of1980s, Zhang Ping surpasses the stance of his own male intellectual.Section two mainly introduces the types and characteristics of female images in Zhang Ping’s later political realism fiction. Through these females, we can conclude Zhang Ping’s view of women as well as his attention to the disadvantaged groups and critical realism behind it.Section three compares the female images of Zhang Ping’s later works in a multi-direction way. Compared to his earlier works, his female characters gradually dropped from sight. We can find that Zhang Ping always maintains respect and pays attention to females in contrast with other officialdom novel writers. However, compared with females in American social exposure novels, these typed females lost some subjectivity.All in all, the females created by Zhang Ping have their own unique charm of era. This thesis mainly classifies and compares those female characters of different periods. Then, by comparing with females in those works of previous and later two periods, of other writers in that same period as well as of the same kind of novels in foreign countries, we will further analyze them in multi-angles and reveal the meaning contained by them.
