With a very long history and rich culture, China has a lot of culture-loaded words.With the increasing rise of China’s political, economic and cultural influence in theworld, with the role of China becoming more and more important, and with the fastdevelopment of cultural exchanges, it is becoming more and more important to translateculture-loaded words and expressions properly, because it can help to introduce Chineseculture to English readers and promote cross-cultural exchanges.The cultural exchanges need translation, and cultural understandings in translationhave been drawing more and more attention from translators. Most of the translationerrors appear not because of the patterns of the complex grammar but ofmisunderstanding of the source culture. When a translator translates, he should firstlytake equivalence at word level into consideration. The most important part is usually thetranslation of culturally-loaded words. Therefore, it is very necessary to study them.Qian Zhongshu’s Fortress Besieged is a well-known novel, which is very popularboth at home and abroad. The English version of the novel is a great success in thecircles of the literature translation. In the English version, in terms of translatingstrategies and techniques, there are many things worthy of being praised and beinglearned. Among them, the translation of culture-loaded words is a very distinguishedand important part that cannot be ignored, the reason of which is that there are so manyculture-loaded words in the original, and they contain quite a lot of cultural factors.Therefore, it is especially important for those words to be translated properly; besides,for the target readers, the proper translation of them also can play a big role for thereaders to understand the Chinese elements in the novel. Besides, it also directly affectsthe realization of the successful spreading of Chinese culture in English-speakingcountries. For that reason, we should pay more attention to it and promote the researchon it. The author intends to study Chinese Culture-Loaded Words based on thetranslation strategies of domestication and foreignization.The culture-loaded words are classified into different categories in the thesis, and their respective translated forms are also presented. As for the choice of the translatingstrategies, the author makes the analysis and the study of the translation forculture-loaded words, and finds that although the culture-loaded words are translatedmainly based on the strategy of foreignization, the supplementary strategy ofdomestication is necessary and can’t be eliminated. As for the reason why the translatortranslates the novel in that manner, the author also gives a detailed analysis.As for the translation techniques, free translation, free translation with an explanation,substitution methods and literal translation, literal translation with an explanation,transliteration, transliteration with an explanation are the main specific techniques ofdomestication and foreignization respectively. In the paper, the techniques will beexplained one by one with chosen examples. Through using the strategies and thetechniques, the translator successfully translates the culture-loaded words into English.The English version turns out to be a big success, which is very popular and recognizedby its readers.In short, from a cross-cultural perspective, the paper studies the relationshipbetween language, culture and translation, and the concrete techniques and strategies inthe translation of Chinese culture-loaded words. The author hopes to make contributionsto the translation of culture-loaded words into English in other literature works throughthe study of those in the novel Fortress Besieged so as to make efforts to accelerate theincreasingly rapid development of the cultural communication between China and therest of the world.
