Totem,which can be traced to primordial times, is both an ancient and unique cultural phenomenon pervading throughout the world and the origin the ethnic culture. As a symbolic aesthetic culture sign, it has held an important role in the history of the minority ethnic religion. Though, as the earliest courier station of the human being culture journey, it has become the ancient historical memory, as a phenomenon of religion culture, it has spread into every aspects of human life. Totem like a distinguished guest, has been accepted by and gain permanent inhabitation right from inhabitancy culture, which is one important component of human culture.The Va nationality, as time honoring aborigines, has attach consistent importance to its unique traditional culture. Due to limitations in geographical location, economical, social and cognitive development, the ethnic culture is featured by strong religion belief and widespread totem culture.This thesis studies the inhabitation environment of the Va nationality, analyzes its application in the indoor and outdoor decoration of residents’ dwelling. The outdoor decoration includes the gate,pile of stockaded village and the bargeboard of the houseroof while the indoor decoration covers the door sheet, wall and internal space of the living room. Through the research into the symbols of totem, this thesis aims to find out the connotation of totem culture,further preserves totem culture, digs out the essence of totem culture and put it into use in the development of the expression form of modern design. With the fast economic development and the invasion of foreign culture, totem culture has faded away. Under the backcloth of today’s revival attention to national culture, the research on the application of totem symbol in the Va residents both gives a stage for the show of china’s ancient totem culture and plays an important role in the exposure, inebriation, preservation and spreading of the culture of the Va nationality. What has been stated above shows the significance of this research.Firstly this paper summarizes the background of the totem culture of Va nationality by referring to the Va nationalitys specific nature conditions and historical culture. Then, by co nducting numerous investigations of the local area and looking up in a great number of hist orical documents, we have obtained clear information that almost every Va village has pres erved more or less particular relics for worshiping the totem. Among these relics, some are carved on the village gate or pile; some are decorated on the big houses; and some are embe dded in the bargeboard. By further analyzing these totem symbols applied on the inhabited environment and accurately acquiring the meaning of them, we have found the inner relatio nship between the totem culture and the decorated elements of Va inhabited environment. L astly, through this research, we arrive at a conclusion that only if we focus on giving more p rotection to the Va totem culture, can it be inherited and develop in a better way.
