Geography which is considered as the mother of sciences was born in the ancient Greece which nurtured a splendid civilization. The most outstanding achievement of the ancient Greek culture was the philosophy whose development required people to perceive the whole world. On this basis, the ancient Greeks started to explore the world, and then the ancient geography arose at the historic moment. The ancient Greeks founded and developed the subject of geography, and the ancient Romans who inherited the Greek civilization expanded the category of geography and made it a separate and complete subject. As a record of the geographical achievements, the Natural History written by the elder Pliny lived in the early days of the Roman Empire was a unique window to study on the ancient Greek and Roman geography. The achievements of the ancient Greek and Roman geography reflected the natural science and technology development level of that time, which also reflected the political, economic, cultural, and other aspects of the development of that time from a side.This essay is divided into three parts:the preface, the text and the conclusion. And the text is divided into five chapters:The first and the second chapters introduce the development of the ancient Greek geography. The two chapters introduce the achievements of the ancient Greek geography in the Classical Period and the Hellenistic Period.The third and the forth chapters introduce the development of the ancient Roman geography. The two chapters introduce the geography in the period of the Republic of Rome and the early Roman Empire.The fifth chapter briefly discusses the impact to the future generations.
