As the paragon of Chinese antique furniture, Su-style furniture of Ming and Qing dynasty is always shocking people’s heart for its varies style, ultimate artistry, reasonable structure and excelsior craftsmanship, of which chairs are the typical representative. This paper has made a systematic and in-depth study of Su-style chair of Ming and Qing dynasty from its background, variety, characteristic of component parts, material, structure and craft. It is hoped that the study can make a devotion to improve the theory system of Su-style furniture and promote the traditional art and craft of Chinese nation.Firstly, this paper researched the background of Su-style chair of Ming and Qing dynasty, which is mainly about its natural and geographic environment, economy and culture, and the development of Chinese traditional chairs.Secondly, the variety and shape of Su-style chair of Ming and Qing dynasty was analyzed systematically by induction based on the documents study and on-the-spot investigation. Furthermore, the development and evolution was presented by analysis of specific examples.Thirdly, after studied numbers of Su-style chairs, the main structure component parts of them were classified, and then the modeling and decoration were analyzed one by one. Finally, the modeling rules and decoration variation of different period were found.Finally, the material and key structure of Su-style chairs of Ming and Qing dynasty were analyzed, the whole process of the lineation was showed by taking the lineation of a South officer cap chair as an example. What is more, measures which usually taken during the lineation were summarized and analyzed. All those were based on comparing and analysis plenty of data, which is from interviewing some craftsman, investigating on the spot, and internship in a factory by the author of this paper. Consequently, the well-chosen material, the reasonable structure, and the exquisite craftsmanship were revealed thoroughly.
