Musical On The Town-Music Performance Analysis

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), was an American composer, conductor, pianist andmusic educator. In favor of his unique talent in inspiration and creativity, Leonard contributedto music development in many projects, which made him worldwide well known in20thCentury. Besides, he was the first American who got worldwide honor at international musicarea. Additionally, many other people recognized him as the greatest conductor in America.He is the legend, not only for outstanding creative work, also for his great passion charmingfascination, strong belief and ever-lasting desire for life.This thesis aims to research his early music play "On the town", which is also one of hisrepresentative works. He mixed together professional creating technique and music dance ofAmerican style. That improved the musical play taste and performance art in a new stage. Toevaluate his creating style objectively, this article mainly discuss several aspects, such as thetheme of the play, music technique as well as scenes in the play, etc.In chapter one, it will generally introduce Leonard Bernstein, including his career anddifferent working period.In Chapter two, it is about the analysis in musicology way. At beginning, we start fromthe Time and personal working background. Secondly, the creating technique of musicontology will be analyzed separately. To sum up, the article will conclude the creatingtechnique and make it clear about music function when creating.In Chapter3, it will analyze the creating character for "On the town"and longitudinallysummarize the whole character, special character and character of music play, etc.In Chapter4, it emphasized some part of scenes and their music expression, mainlycontains first time music sources, plot of dance explanation, psychology and centralizedreflect of the comedy atmosphere and etc.In5th charter, this thesis will conclude Bernstein’s creating style based on aboveresearches in Chapter one to four, and finally extract and purify Bernstein’s musical point ofview from the play "On the town".
