With the rapid development in economy, China has played an increasingly important role in the world. In view of this, the westerllers want to acquaint with principles and policies of our government. The report on the work of government includes a variety of information on the social, economic and cultural development status and their future planning, which provides the channel to the westerners in learning the conditions of our country. Accordingly, the rendition of the Government Work Report is becoming more and more important. Government work reports belong to a peculiar type of text, having a special style with both universal and unique linguistic characteristics. They are delivered orally by premiers at the People’s Congress, yet are written with extreme elaboration. They consist of looking back at the past achievements and shortcomings as well as planning the work for the following year. For most part, they clarify and expound the policies and viewpoints of the government. Therefore, their translation should have clear and precise diction, and ambiguity is forbidden.With the development of globalization and integration, translation is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange between China and the West. This thesis will study the application of the functionalism in the political documents translation. And the2011Government Work Report will serve as the subject of the study. As the theoretical foundation, the functionalism will get the thorough explanation in the thesis. First of all, the main principles of the functionalism will be discussed, which will provide guidance for translating political documents. And after the detailed analysis of the English version of the Government work Report the guiding role of the functionalism could be better comprehended by the translators. Thus they may apply it effectively in the translation of political documents. The author of this thesis makes a tentative research on the translation of political writings in light of functional approaches, aiming at discovering proper translation strategies and methods, improving Chinese-English translation (C—E for short thereafter) quality and facilitating communication. |
