The furniture design development nowadays has not only been regarded as aproduct design that exists in our life, but also embodied as a design of life-style and thecommunication of cultural resources. Based on the detailed research of traditionalfurniture culture and history, as well as the investigation on the trend of modernfurniture design, the author attempted to inherit the essence of Chinese traditionalculture and convey the vitality of modern furniture design from a new perspective.Chinese traditional decorative symbols, as the crystallization of the Chinese wisdom,have become peculiar cultural creation and spiritual civilization after long years’precipitation in China. Therefore, from the perspective of semiotics, the author in detailexamined the subject of Chinese traditional decorative symbols in modern furnituredesign, trying to absorb the energy of new design to guide the design perspective of thisthesis in order to provide a new platform for inheriting Chinese traditional symbols andthe development of modern furniture design.Closely around this subject of the embodiment Chinese traditional decorativesymbols in the modern furniture design, the author mainly divided the thesis into fiveparts to explain in detail. In the first part, starting from the analysis of related researchtopics of background and the literature review of the domestic and foreign scholars, theauthor attempted to find the combining site between Chinese traditional decorativesymbols and modern furniture design from a new perspective and then made furtheranalysis of the subject content and research methods. In the second part, the authordiscussed the semiotic theory and traditional researches on the concept of "symbols",and put forward the interpretation of "form" and "meaning" in the traditional decorativesymbols. In the third part, through the comparative studies of the morphology, structureand decoration and other aspects between furniture and architecture, the author madetheoretical basis for the development of Chinese traditional decorative symbols byreading the relevant literature reviews on Chinese traditional decorative symbols.Modern furniture design requires elucidation of traditional decorative symbols. Theauthor made further discussion about the symbol semantics and function analysis of theembodiment Chinese traditional decorative symbols in the modern furniture design. Inthe fourth part, the author studied the application method and principle of constructionof Chinese traditional decorative symbols in modern furniture design from the semiotic perspective. In the fifth part, the author discussed the symbol semantics of design indetail, combing with the author’s design cases in this thesis.In this thesis, from the perspective of semiotics, the author studied Chinesetraditional decorative symbols in modern furniture design manifestation in detail. Intoday’s advocacy of original ecological design and a return to traditional connotationdesign trend, the author tried to find a new way to inherit the essence of Chinesetraditional culture, looking for providing a new theory guideline for the modernfurniture design.
