Bai Xianyong is one of the most important writers in Chinese literary scene in the world, the unique living environment and life experiences have created Bai Xianyong’s representative works. This dissertation discusses the thread of ideas in Bai Xianyong’s writing from three parts-personality, role and realm.In the first chapter, I study on Bai Xianyong’s life and emotion experience and want to investigate the profound influence on his outlook on the world, the life and the literature from the real life. Bai Xianyong’s life experience has far-reaching effect on his personality and creation. Bai Xianyong is the offspring of a famous journal of Kuomintang, and the war changes the history of China and also changes the destiny of Chinese. The people moving from the mainland to Taiwan have been facing the upheaval of the material and spiritual life, unable to get out of the past and can not face the reality. Bai Xianyong,who is influenced by traditional Chinese cultural at an early age, facing the impact of the Western modernists, chooses to fuse the literary techniques of Chinese and Western to express his cultural nostalgia.In the second chapter, the meaning of the "role" will be exaggerated extend. Bai Xianyong’s creative is interpreted as three different levels of lead:the tragic characters, history and gay. Bai Xianyong is always adhere to the creation of tragedy. His creation becomes more and more mature, but his " leading role" has been consistent. The tragic figure struggling in life,the uncontrolled history and the insulted homosexuality have always been the focus of Bai Xianyong’s writing. Through Bai Xianyong’s creation, rootless" Taipei", vulnerable "New York:guest", sincere young (?) of the era " can be recorded in the history of literature, and become displayed in front of the reader.In the third chapter, I study the realm of Bai Xianyong’s creative from the tragedy spirit and art spirit. Bai Xianyong’s value lies in the integrity of his artistic and the profundity of his thoughts. Bai Xianyong who graduated from the English department and studied in the United States after college, fuses tradition and modern, Chinese and Western literature theory and creation method perfectly, become the best. Adhering to the tragedy creation road, it makes Bai Xianyong realize profoundly that the force of the fate and death is so strong and the power human is so limited and the life is so weak. Facing the tragedy of time and destiny, Buddhist Bai Xianyong full of pathos, faces the vicissitudes of life history and helpless destiny directly. As the son of the senior general of the Kuomintang-Bai Chongxi, Bai Xianyong gets great achievements in the literary and creates the peak of career that is very different from the father’s.
