David Henry Hwang is a prominent playwright in American drama history. Although many researchers have studied him and his works, the study of his religious view is still not enough in China. Thus, taking the post-colonial criticism and narratology as the theory bases, this thesis makes the analysis on David Henry Hwang’s three plays:Family Devotions, Rich Relations and Golden Child by the strategies of Homi Bhabha’s Hybridity, Third Space and Booth’s Implied Author, and this thesis intends to explore the main clue of Hwang’s plays and to examine the author’s religious view advocated in his three plays. The thesis argues that the religious view which is reflected in these three plays is to create and pursue a third space. The religious view existing in this space belongs neither to Chinese Confucian regulations nor to Christianity. It is actually the result of negotiation between Chinese Confucian regulations and Christianity. Therefore, it is a new one closely related with the two.The thesis is composed of six parts. The first part is the introduction. It makes a brief introduction of David Henry Hwang’s life and the three plays. Then it gives a summary about the research on Hwang and his works and expounds the research aim and research significance. The second part firstly introduces the concepts of Hybridity and Third Space and then makes a brief introduction to the notion of Implied Author. The third part, from these three angles:family, Confucian regulations and Christian doctrines, American-Chinese and American-Japanese, analyses various conflicts in these three plays. The fourth part shows the hybrid religious view that is hold by the Golden Child and her son, Andrew. The fifth part summarizes the similarities and differences between the implied author and the real author in these three plays by applying Booth’s theory of Implied Author. Finally, this thesis makes a conclusion that the author Hwang holds a hybrid religious view. He hopes to establish a harmonious and diversified society by the dialogue among different civilizations.
