A Study Of Religious Outlook Of Tang Sitong’s Benevolence

Tang Sitong was one of the leaders of the Reform Movement of1898in the Late QingDynasty, and he was also one of the most influential thinkers in the intellectual history ofmodern China. In the view of Age-People-Thought,this paper aimed to analysis that TangSitong absorbed and used some thought resources such as Confucianism,Christianity andBuddhism to establish the new confucianism system which in the core of "Think thebenevolence of God’s works is an organic whole".Tang attached a great importance to the role of religion. By emphasizing religioncontains the essence of academic and political words, his religion was very seriously, so hepositively participated in the Movement of Confucianism, and advocated religion evolutionof the Confucianism,further more, he established Confucius as the hierarch of theConfucianism,and then builder churches which could provide a place for people gatheringand doctrine spreading. It could spread Confucianism in the way of the Christianity do, thusprovided a spiritual conversion for amplitude Chinese. Tang Sitong’s Benevolence Theorycombined the theory about Christianity and Buddhism, absorption "Idealism" in Buddhism,"consciousness almost equal" and "to the heart regained their calamity"; Concepts ofChristianity such as the "Ether", the" Soul",and"Equality".These innovated some factorswhich were in adapted for time development in the Confucianism, and constructed a newConfucianism in the core of" Works of God’s is an organic whole". This new Confucianismmade the Ether as the base of God’s work, it claimed all things as a whole. In the process ofcontinuously generating, development and derivation, the new Confucianism broke throughall net hunting’s in the world and exploded all restraints of the Confucian Ethics.
