The Exotic Image In Xu Zhimo’s Literary Creation

Xu Zhimo is not only an important writer in the history of the Chinese modern literature, but also a writer who has rich experiences in foreign countries, so the exotic images in his works are varied and colorful, among which the British and Japanese images are particularly vivid and active. Drawing on the imagology in comparative literature, this paper intends to analyze the exotic images in works of Xu Zhimo by studying the individual experiences abroad of the writer and the literary writings in relation to the foreign countries, with British and Japanese images being its focus. Meanwhile this paper combs carefully the subconscious influences on Xu Zhimo exerted by the imaginary matter of the entire society about the Chinese understanding of the Great Britain and Japan, which has already existed in Chinese cultural deposition and analyses the effect these influences have on depicting exotic images of the characters. At the same time, combining with the writer’s own unique writing ideas, especially the ideas of being pure and romantic, this paper analyses how deep the author’s own factors influence the molding of the exotic images. This paper mainly analyses the different foreign scenes and figures in the two poems:Farewell, River Cam Once Again! and Goodbye so as to discover and fully appereciate the lively exotic images in his works, thus seeking out the exotic elements in the subjective ideology of Xu Zhimo.Focusing on the British and the Japanese images created by Xu Zhimo, the paper tries to be objective and rational when it deals with their relationship with China, trying to avoid introducing subjunctive factors. The author of the paper pays close attention to exotic images, shows great respect for the original style of the works and tries to keep the original look and the integrity of the works. The paper also tries to see through Xu Zhimo’s hearts and eyes to show the Chinese understanding of other countries as well as the outlook of other countries in the vision of Chinese culture. It aims at commending the special significance and the unique value of Xu Zhimo in Chinese Contemporary Literature, expanding the area of research of Xu Zhimo’s works and making a new attempt in the research practice area of imagology in Chinese comparative Literature.
