Ezra Pound is one of the greatest men in the English-American literature of the twentieth century. He is not only a famous modern poet, but also a critics and translator. He leads the Imagism Poetry Movement which is the beginning of modern English-American poetry. Pound translates a lot of Chinese classical poetry and introduces the tradition of the Chinese poetry into the western modern culture promoting the development of American new poetry. He is famous not only because of his creation of Cantos but also his plenty of poetry translation such as Cathay. In1915his first Chinese poetry collection Cathay was published in London and people in Europe and American had never been so interested in the Chinese culture so he was praised as an ambassador of introducing the Chinese culture to the West.Pound’s success is attributable to his application of the translator’s subjectivity Literature translation is not only the interaction between languages but also the art of recreation. By addressing the translator’s subjectivity in Pound’s translation of the classical Chinese poetry, the paper is intended to shed new light on the study of Pound’s translation. The author argues that Pound’s translation of the classical Chinese poetry extents great influence on American and British poetry.Based on careful theoretical analysis and case studies, the author has reached the conclusions as follows:(1) Under the traditional translation theory Pound’s translation is unfaithful and exists a lot of mistranslation. But the mistranslation is not caused by his little knowledge of languages but is done on purpose by Pound. The author thinks Pound takes the special media and has his own characteristics whose translation affects American poetry greatly, so serious study should be made on him.(2) Pound’s translation is a kind of creative rewriting, which embodies his subjectivity. The study on him should not limit to the biographical research and the literature appreciation, we should take efforts to explore new perspectives. (3) The translator’s subjectivity is an important factor in translation and translation can not be separated from the translator’s subjectivity. The study on it has great significance on translation practice. It is a novel try of this thesis to combine Pound’s translation and translator’s subjectivity. Therefore, there must be many defects. Nevertheless, the author hopes in the near future, more and more scholars will conduct further and diversified researches into the field.
