A Study On Yang Jie’s Poems And Proses In Wu Wei County Of Northern Song Dynasty

Yang Jie, a scholar in Wu Wei county of Northern Song Dynasty, is famous for his grand poems and excellent proses, virtues and welldoing. As an official for his country, he actively involves himself in the discussion of the reform of rites, so many of his articles are about decrees and regulations, which are strictly structured and elaborately reasoned. In addition, because of his interest in talking about Buddhism and the ideas of Lao Zhuang, Buddhism in particular, he is resourceful and capable of analogy and creating marvelous ideas. Yang Jie has a close relation with "the Yuanyou intellectual group ". Though in a strict sense he cannot be called a scholar of the Group, his companion with the group members makes the contents and artistic features of his works somewhat influenced by the Group.The main body of this article includes three chapters. The first is on the life story of Yang Jie, including his extraction and time of birth and death, his company with literati and officialdom like Su Shi and monks. Collection and classification of his works are also presented. The second chapter is on his poems. We’ll going to analyze them from two aspects: subjects and contents, artistic features. As for the subjects and contents, his poems can be divided into farewell poems, nostalgic poems, Dinggedicht poems and the Wall poems. Based on these poems, the artistic features of his works are uncovered:directness, simplicity, refinedness and novelty, originality, elegance and unity. The third chapter is on Yang Jie’s proses, which are also analyzed from their subjects and contents and artistic features. The subjects and contents include rites and music, memorial to the throne, Buddhism activities and doctrines, travelogue and nostalgia. These reflect the artistic features of "well-organized structure""pertinence""terseness and artfulness""matter-of-fact writing""elaborately reasoned""simplicity and genuineness ".The concluding parts discuss Yang Jie’s relationship with "Yuanyou style" from the evaluation of editor of the Imperial Manuscript Library. Because of his company with the Group, together with the influence of the literary background in the age of " Xi Ning、Yuan Feng、Yuan You、 Shao Sheng", on the one hand, his works is marked with the stamps of the times, on the other hand, they are different from "Yuanyou style ". Contrasting "one " with "many" does not only reveal diversified features of "Yuanyou style", but also enrich the literary circles in the whole Northern Song Dynasty.
