In the modern world history, with the rise of the England, Christianity has been widelypropagated to the colonies of the England all over the world. Since the beginning of theestablishment in the16thcentury,As a branch of the protestants,Church of England (Churchof England or Anglican Communion, also known as the Anglican Church) has propagatedChristianity righteousness in the United States, Africa, India or other colonies. For centuriesChurch of England has developed many overseas communication associations in order topropagate the Christian, which has made an important contribution to the Anglican convention. It is SPG that should be particularly noteworthy.In1701, by British royal approval of sendingforeign missionaries to North America, Tomas Bray established SPG (The Society for thePropagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts). This paper selects the activities that SPGpropagated Christianity to black slaves in North America in the18thcentury as the researchobject, the paper is divided into three sections. The first part of this paper introduces thebackground, the purpose, the operating mechanisms of SPG.The second part is the main partof the paper, through the letters between Church of England and the priests, also the literaturematerial of the autobiographies, after introducing the condition how SPG converted the NorthAmerica Indians, the white, the black audience,we will focus on the endeavours made for theblack(including the charity and public welfare that missionaries of SPG build for the blackaudience, taking meticulous and humanized missionary means),and the reason why thenumber of the converted black men is not huge. In this part, the paper will use historicalnarration and history analysis, by the means of comparison, through the compare of themissionary activities of the Church of England and Quakers, from the two levels analysis(internal and external causes), we will know the reasons why SPG’s North Americamissionary works are blocked. On one hand, Church of England internal sectarian divided, serious Anglican teachings Catholic residuals, the shortage of funds, some bishopmissionaries’inhospitality and lack of effective supervisions all made SPG with congenitaldeficiency; On the other hand, in the18thcentury,external disturbances including religiousdiversity of north American continent, the particularity of the black audience, slave owners’stubbornness, the sensitivity of the slavery issue also increased the difficulties of the NorthAmerican missionary work.In the18thcentury the United States went through GreatAwakening and American Revolution, this paper tries to put the American continent missionary activities of SPG into the background of that time, through the responses of SPGin these great historical events,we will see the missionary activities in a wider vision. In thethird part, the paper will make the brief analysis of the influence of SPG’s missionaryactivities in the black in order to fully assess SPG. |
