Xinjiang, with its vast territory and abundant resources, is located in the northwest of ourmotherland. Particular geological features created a unique natural landscape of Xinjiang,with the determined desert Populus, the heroic desert mountains and graceful grasslandsendless flow, which constitute the unique beauty of the picturesque landscape. The vastdiversity of culture and history develops into Xinjiang’s unique cultural background andnational culture. All nations dressed in colorful costumes, singing and dancing, build the folkcustom of Xinjiang, which is full of exotic features. All these have become the most valuableand most unique artistic resources of Xinjiang watercolor creation. To give full play to localresources, to create a distinctive ethnic features watercolor style, is an important feature ofXinjiang watercolor painting.In this paper, the development and growth of Xinjiang watercolor painting is firstlystudied. From its roots up to today’s prosperity and development, the typical figures andexamples of every period are analyzed to provide a historical basis for the study of theformation of geographical features of Xinjiang watercolor.Secondly, the paper focuses on the introduction of how Xinjiang watercolor to be basedon local national resources, and to take the ethnic customs as the main inspiration, to make thenational culture as the creating content, to take realistic expression and decorative expressionas the expressing pattern, to use expressions suited to Xinjiang regional characteristics, tocreate Xinjiang watercolor style with a distinctive regional characteristics.After that, the reasons of the formation of Xinjiang watercolor geographical features aremainly analyzed. The author starts with the special nature of Xinjiang geography, history andcultural background, traces back to the origin of the formation of regional characteristics ofXinjiang watercolor, indicating that this distinctive regional characteristics is formed under the external force of special circumstances (including geography, historical environment, artand culture). Meanwhile, the author also traces back to the composing background ofXinjiang watercolor groups, analyzes the personality traits, the mental outlook and artisticnature of watercolor creators, to further investigate the internal reason of the formation of theregional style of Xinjiang watercolor.Finally, taking the regional characteristics of watercolor of Inner Mongolia and Yunnanas an example, the national characteristics of watercolor creation of other nations in westernregions are briefly analyzed and compared. Learning from others, thinking about the futuredevelopment of Xinjiang watercolor, the author aims at proposing comments and suggestionson the development of Xinjiang watercolor, and setting new ideas to develop Xinjiangwatercolor.
