Li Shangyin is one of the most influential poets during the Late Tang period. His poems which have abundant elegant and mysterious images, including the Left Untitled and the equivalent short titled, have won great attention from both Chinese and overseas academies. Although the studies on Li Shangyin from the overseas scholars which are not as satisfying as on the other most famous ancient literary seem not as prosperous as have been imagined to be, there are numbers of stars and sparkles which are really influential and important for the studies keep coming out and shining with strong shines. This thesis focuses on the overseas studies on the poems of the Left Untitled and those with complex and many-faceted interpretations through the ways of giving titles, versions of Li’s collections in public communication before Ming Dynasty, the biographical studies based on Li’s works, poetic studies with four poems as examples for case studies. With the comparative and contractive studies on scholars from north America, France and Japan which are the three traditional academies of Sinology in a conventional and methodological background from China, the author tries to find their merits as for helps and their demerits as for references in a much broader view and as a compensation for the domestic studies on Li.
