| Popular songs refer to the songs which apply simple words and structures to express common people’s feelings and emotions which prevail during a certain period of time. Today, popular songs play a more and more important role in people’s lives. As a crucial part of the popular songs, lyrics not only need to keep accompany with the excited music but also need to reflect people’s living situation and meet their psychological needs. The more popular the songs are, the more important the lyrics would be.In recent years, many scholars and experts have made analysis on popular song lyrics. However, most of the researches are focused on interpersonal relationship, aesthetic research, mood analysis, etc. In the thesis, the author tries to use Speech Act theory to investigate and analyze popular song lyrics and then make a conclusion on its pragmatic functions. The author hopes that the research can provide a new vision to the research on popular song lyrics and enlighten future researchers.The thesis can be divided into six parts:part one is the introduction to the whole research, including research significance, research purpose, methodology, etc; part two is the explanation to several important concepts, such as pop music, popular song, and popular song lyrics; part three is literature review, introducing the theories applied in the research, including locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary act, indirect speech act, macro and micro speech act; part four is about the application of Speech Act theory in analyzing popular song lyrics; part five is pragmatic functions of popular song lyrics; the last one is the conclusion, including findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research. |
