In recent years, a new force rises in the overseas Chinese literature. Yan Geling, one of the most representative female Chinese writer who lives in the US, has created many long novels, novelette, and short novels, as well as screenplays and biographies, etc, which has aroused extensive concern in the research circle. The thesis takes Yan Geling’s novels as the research object and text analysis as the emphasis, tries to open the aspects which have been neglected from a new perspective, and explores the formative influence of her eight years’dance experience on her writing. The author also tries to seek dominant connections between Yan Geling’s novels and her dance with various references to related lectures, interviews, etc. With careful reading of her novels, the author tries to find related potential connections between the dance and text and find the emotion and value behind this connection. The introduction part contains the introduction to Yan Geling’s life, works, as well as the present studies on her. Chapter One traces the origins. It discusses the historical origins between literature and dance. Dance and literature are closely connected with each other. They are different ways of expressing emotions, to be specific, when emotions exceed the category of linguistic expression, their expression mainly relies on actions, namely, to convey them with body movements. In Yan Geling’s novels, dance often melts into text with decorative things, such as dancing dress, dancing shoes, and so on. These things display the existence of images.Chapter Two takes dance posture, the core of dance, as the cut-in point and analyzes the effect of dance on the characterization and story narration in Yan Geling’s novels. The author chooses three kinds of postures,"misplacement","revolving", and "modeling" to make explanations and explores the mental dilemma of man Yan Geling has expressed by them.Chapter Three goes further to deal with the value pursued and expressed by the dancer’s spirit of intoxication, freedom, nirvana in works of Yan Geling, who is a writer and dancer. At last, the author simply reviews the course of overseas Chinese writers’developments from their grass-rooted writing to intellectual writing. The author points out the specialty of writing of Yan Geling, who is an overseas writer, that is, the spiritual communication without country boundary to make up the gap between cultures, and to seek for the truth and beauty of human nature as well as the tragedy of the impossibility to fulfill this wish. The thesis aims at starting a new method of studying Yan Geling’s novels through discussing the relationships between dance and novel, and provides a possibility to the interdisciplinary research of literary works.
