Study On Microphone Selection Method In Recording Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments

In the recording practice of Chinese traditional musical instruments, how to choose a suitable microphone to record and restore the tone of the instruments’ characteristics has been a focus for engineers to explore on. Based on the view of corresponding relationship between the frequency response characteristics of microphones and the sound characteristics of instruments, the audio clips of the Chinese traditional musical instruments which recorded by three commonly used condenser microphones are studied in the paper. With the method of MATLAB/Simulink spectrum analysis and the comparison of harmonic relationship between the audio spectrum and the sound characteristics of instruments, the paper is trying to prove the adaptability of different microphones with different types of frequency response characteristics in recording Chinese traditional musical instruments. The paper not only proposed the reference method of recording Chinese traditional musical instruments by using condenser microphones, but also provided the method of objective analysis and verification to the evaluation of the recording of Chinese traditional musical instruments.The topic of this paper is described and studied in three sections. In the first section, the parameters and the characteristics of the microphones used in the experiment is introduced, and the reason of choosing these microphones are explained. Based on MATLAB platform in the second section, the paper analyzed the harmonic consistence of the music samples of the plucked, stroked, bowed strings, and the wind of Chinese traditional musical instruments, as well as the audio clip "Jiangnan Sizhu" which recorded in A/B format. The paper studies on the application of condenser microphones with different types of frequency response in recording the popular Chinese traditional musical instruments. In the third section, the paper puts out the summary and the conclusion of the application in the recording of different types of Chinese traditional musical instruments in condenser microphones, with bringing up the method of microphone selection, and finally prospects the widely application of the conclusion of this paper in recording areas.
