The objective of this dissertation is to find usages and applications of viola in chambermusic of Weber and Schubert--two important Romantic musicians in the early19th century.Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, guitaristand critic, one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Weber’s operasgreatly influenced the development of the Romantic opera in Germany. In1809, he wroteAndante e Rondo ungarese,op.35which is played by viola and piano. Franz Schubert(1797-1828) was a Austrian composer, one of the representative figure of the early Romanticmusic, and considered to be the last master of the classical music. Therefore, he played animportant role as a connecting link between classical period and romantic period. He wasnoted by his work a minor Arpeggione SonataThe methodology is to analysis the function of viola in tradition of breaking, traditionalharmony, and rich tone wavering; characteristics of Weber’s work within the viola concertowith the small band, function of viola of playing Hungarian dance melodies, usage of viola inthe Hungarian dance style and rhythm; and how to use the viola to performance personalinclinations in the early19th century--to change rhythm and intensity and how to use theviola playing skills to show individuals with skilled-interpretation of the work.The dissertation chose the violist Yuri Bashmet, known as the viola "Paganini", asreference of playing. Because he is one of most influential figures in Russian modern music,who has irreplaceable viola playing skill. His tone is pure, honest and simple.
