Johannes Brahms (Johannes Brahms,1833-1897) is a famous German composer regarded as a throwback in the European Romantic era in the nineteenth century, who has a significant influence on music history. He combined classical principles and romantic spirit, which made a unique contribution on the development of European music culture.Brahms’outstanding achievement is his symphonies and piano music, and his chamber music is the main creation in his career. He is one of the distinguished romantic composers, in terms of the quantity and the quality. His magnum opus is chamber music-"Brahms F minor first Viola Sonata" created in the nineteenth century, which is pure and refined without any decoration, and expresses profound meaning and beauty by perfect combination of the unique viola timbre and dreariness. This sonata is the touchstone and the classic of the viola chamber music, and learned by all violists.This thesis studies the bow features in "Brahms F minor first Viola Sonata", and summarizes the general characteristics and points out the overall style.Fist of all, it analyzes the background and the work of "the Brahms F minor first Viola Sonata". It explains the background of this work in terms of music history and Brahms’life, analyzes the musical structure of the sonata, characteristic of harmony technique and musical expression using musical analysis method, for the whole understanding of learners. On the basis of the analysis, the writer gains insight into the music image and the technique of expression.Secondly, combing practices, the thesis fully and elaborately analyzes the characteristics of bowing skills, performance features and aesthetic meaning. In the process of performing melody, rhythm, dynamics, it represents bowing skills with legato, spiccato, staccato. On the basis of these bowing characteristics, it sets the rhythm, studies the change of tempo and strength, and chooses the best suitable way to deal with the bowing skills. How to control the bow hand is an important skill, which could control the timbre and volume.
