The collage skill is one of the most frequently used skills in postmodernism novels.This skill originated from painting, which was widely used by Cubism, Dada and Surrealism painters, usually referring to put irrelevant materials like clipping newspaper, bottle cap, opera ticket, etc. together to paste into a particular surface. Then the skill extended to all fields, and in the fields of literature, modernism and postmodernism apply the skill much, especially the latter one. In postmodernism literature, collage skill means the way to insert quotations, metaphors, foreign expressions and non-words compositions, etc. into a text. Writers as James Joyce, T.S.Eliot, Ezra Pound, Donald Barthelme and so on, once made use of collage skill a lot.Studying the application of the collage skill in postmodernism novels have two senses:discipline construction and cultural perspective.Firstly, there have been quite a few collage works, a higher percentage of which are excellent ones, but most of researchers just found the existence of collage skill in single works, and the analytic processes are so identical that the comprehensiveness and innovativeness of the study become much weaker. Therefore, it’s necessary for us to do much deeper research from all dimensions, hoping to giving convictive opinions about the skill’s connotation, expression forms and characteristics.Secondly, the collage skill is not only a skill, for its application is closely linked with the post-modern humanism background, when such background is a more complex issue. There are various angles to know this issue in postmodernism literature, and choosing studying collage skill is a typical, small angle to enter into the subject easily. At the same time, paying attention to the literature collage is started in a context that collage phenomenon is all around, so discussing the skill’s origination, application background and expression forms can play a part in concerning about the post-modern and today’s collage culture.This paper is divided into six parts:instruction, chapter one to chapter four and the conclusive part.In instruction, we firstly offer the methods to study the skill---archaeological, microscopy and comparative methods, through which we can turn the small issue into a bigger and deeper one. The second part of the instruction is the studies review about the literature collage in China. In this part, we concern the question from people’s initial and sporadic cognitions to today’s studies, whose shortcomings are also checked out. Thus, we form the paper’s writing ideas.Chapter one mainly discuss the origination of collage skill. Most researchers consider that the skill is originated from painting, and then spread to Surrealism literature and applied much in post-modern literature while we believe that such a course misses the law of the literature itself. So after introducing its painting origination briefly in the first quarter, the second quarter accents on the skill’s literature causes, which explained the skill’s development by stating the relationship between novels and reality as well as human beings. In the third quarter, to prove the actual existence of the early collage literature we analysis the application of collage skill in three classical works:Don Quixote, Gargantua et Pantagruel and Tristram Shandy.Chapter two start with concrete analysis postmodernism novels---the vital center where collage skill be used. The first quarter find out the similarities between post-modern context and collage fever. It is obvious that now our humanistic atmosphere is uncertainty, disorder, non-self and depthless in informational and consumer times. And these characteristics have all presented in art field accordingly, so collage skill is well-received by artists. The second quarter is mainly on the collage creation of postmodern writers, in which we analyze the writer’s personalities as well as various genres.Chapter three, on basis of Chapter two, talk about the representation forms of the skill, without simple enumerations but to combine them with the two kinds of special phenomenon in post-modern culture. The first quarter is on apparent materials, i.e checklists, newspaper summaries, pictures, whose application is closely connected with postmodern culture. The second quarter before discussing the collaged language and structure that more connotive, first analyzes the self-sufficient phenomenon in postmodern texts, the direct result of which is "text" transcends "works" and becomes synonymous with "文本". And both language and structure is the focus of text.Chapter four is the further research for collage skill---analysis on the characteristics of collage skill. The first quarter summarizes its acumination. Along with the abundant in materials, writers juxtapose stuff a lot, however, any kind of juxtaposition goes through recognition and then, accepted or rejected by any writer who holds serious attitude toward creation and points at a no-logic, not-reasonable world and against systematized, against disciplined stand. On the other hand, what goes on with acumination is poetic, as accumulation generates independence and independence or fracture is also that why poetic can be felt. The second quarter discusses heterogeneity. If collage materials don’t have heterogeneity, such works can not be eligible for collage literature. Heterogeneity breaks the continuity of texts and makes various possibilities unfold on space which seems be formed by vines. The third quarter summarizes intertextuality. For one thing, heterogeneous materials are so different that when they encounter, they generate fantastic intertextuality. For another, although it’s different between collage and parody, montage and digress, they are frequently overlapped and can play a part of intertextuality.Conclusive part is a summary about the paper. Collage skill, owning diverse characteristics in whose application from unconscious to conscious stages, has kept its special coordinations in the history of artistic expression. In postmodern times, it’s just like that collage skill has become an important way for literature to get more survival space when human’s aesthetic experience and creativities are constantly challenged by the skill.
