A Study Of The Translation Of Reduplicated Words In Chinese Prose From The Perspective Of "Functional Equivalence"

Prose is a condensed literary style of composition. Its words and phrases arevery natural and elegant. Reduplicated words have special rhetorical effects in rhythm,image and expression, which contribute high aesthetic value and elegant effectivenessto prose writings. Due to the large cultural and language gap between English andChinese, it is impossible for a translator to achieve the complete equivalence intranslation.Under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the presentthesis surveys the English interpretation of reduplicated words in Chinese prose byanalyzing and evaluating the translation of the author. The purpose of this paper is toachieving an overall cognition and realizing self-improvement in reduplicated words’translation.This paper has four chapters．The first chapter discusses the concept of reduplication and reduplicated words,making an awareness of this lexical phenomenon and general contrast of reduplicatedwords between Chinese and English language. The second part is an overview ofNida’s Functional Equivalence. The third chapter is the body of this paper. Based onthe reduplicated words in translating practice, the author categorizes and analyzesthem with tentative strategies under the theory of “functional equivalence”, duringwhich I also find out shortages and problems of my translation. The fourth chapter is apart of evaluation. Through the translation comparison with the famous version, I havea clearer evaluation and awareness of my translation standard, all which will lay afoundation for my future translation study.
