There are many three-character Chinese compounds both in Japanese and Chinese. Many linguists make a lot of studies of the four-character Chinese compounds. But there are few studies of the three-character Chinese compounds. Especially the researches of comparison of Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds are very scanty.This master’s thesis first introduced Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds separately in definition. Next classify Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds-from construction types and modification types. Then do four researches to compare the Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds.These four researches are based on quantitative and contrastive analysis which compared Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds at last. The comparisons contain the definition, construction, modification types and the usage of the two languages.The results of these researches are as fellows.1. The definitions of the two are different. The definition of Japanese three-character Chinese compounds is broader than Chinese. So the usage of the Japanese three-character Chinese compounds is wider than Chinese.2. The constructions of the two are similar. Both of them have six types. There are①AABtype,②ABB type,③ABA type,④ABC type,⑤(AB)C type and⑥A(BC) type. The number of⑤(AB)C type of Japanese three-character Chinese compounds are at the most. But the number of⑥A(BC) type of Chinese three-character Chinese compounds are the most.3. The modification types of the two languages are different. There is subsidiary relationship, complementary relationship, modification relationship and so on in Japanese three-character Chinese compounds. There is also parallel relationship etc. in Chinese three-character Chinese compounds. But their modifications are corresponding to each other. We can find some relationship between them.4. We can see Japanese three-character Chinese compounds almost everywhere. However, Chinese three-character Chinese compounds seldom appear in political newspapers, but often appear in oral language and literary works. Finally, comparing Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds from construction and modification types and knowing the differences between them which will help us to learn and understand Japanese and Chinese three-character Chinese compounds well.
