Amy Tan is an outstanding writer who is known as "the teller of Chinese story" amongChinese American writers in American literature. According to her works, it is known thatChinese American women should know about their own culture and transform their ownculture into a kind of strength in order to make them survive better in America. By recallingthe history of Chinese Americans, People can fully realize that the survival status of ChineseAmericans,Amy Tan’s works spread the inner feelings of Chinese Americans vividly.Amy Tan’s The Bonesetter’s daughter is a novel with multiple themes. The domesticexperts mainly study her works from points of view such as narrative technique, ethicalthought, differences between Chinese culture and Western culture and ethnic identity; theforeign experts mainly study her works from ideology, feminism perspective, and ethnicidentity. However, few people study the novel on psychological trauma according to presentresearch situation at home and abroad. The purpose of the thesis with employment of traumatheory is to analyze The Bonesetter’s daughter systematically, providing a new theoreticalperspective for Chinese-American literature.Apart from introduction and conclusion, the paper consists of five chapters: Chapter Oneintroduces an overall statement of Amy Tan and her main works, including present researchsituation at home and abroad, innovation of this paper, purpose and significance.The secondchapter elaborates the concept and classification of trauma, the cause and symptoms ofpsychological trauma and how to cure psychological trauma. In Chapter three Ruling andRuth demonstrated the traumatic symptoms when they faced trauma. Chapter four analyzesRuling and Ruth who experienced psychological trauma in old China and Americanmainstream society on the basis of the first three sections, which combines psychologicaltrauma, explaining this kind of psychological trauma has an enormous impact on theirsurvival and psychology. The fifth chapter, according to the theory of trauma, in order to gorid of trauma, the trauma survivors must be able to write trauma and reconstruct ethnicidentity, as well as establish a good interpersonal relationship with the surrounding groups,eventually to cure the psychological trauma. The purpose of writing this novel is to inspire the Chinese Americans who are sufferingfrom psychological trauma to root in traditional, historical, national culture and to get stickto their mother culture by describing Ruling and Ruth’s experience. Only by this way they cango out of the hazer of soul, that is, to adhere to their own "Chineseness" in Americanmainstream culture, and agree with their bilingual identities.
