This thesis aims to analyze the adoption and function of synaesthesia in VladimirNabokov’s Speak, Memory, trying to understand synaesthesia from physiological,psychological, rhetoric, cognitive and aesthetic perspectives. Meanwhile, relevantresearch works in Chinese and western literary works are also studied in order todiscover and understand the concurrent rule and function of synaesthesia from anextensive view. Russian author Vladimir Nabokov’s works feature exhibiting theintricate world and synesthetic detail. Through the adoption of synaesthesia in thisNabokov’s work as well as other literary works, better understanding of what thewriter or the character experienced in his or her inner heart is more likely to beachieved. Furthermore, synaesthesia, as a special rhetoric device, may effectivelyenhance the aesthetic feelings of articles and create an artistic effect. Analyzing thecharacteristics of synaesthesia in Vladimir Nabokov’s Speak, Memory may provide aclearer view of the merits of synesthesia as a peculiar rhetoric and cognitivemechanism, suggesting a more extensive and effective usage of synaesthesia in otherfields.
