This paper, within the framework of usage-based theories, is an attempt to explore therelationship between frequency effects and language acquisition and its implications forlanguage teaching and learning. These theories, which argue for a prominent role inlanguage experience unhold that all linguistic units are abstracted from language use.Language acquisition is exemplar-based; It is the piecemeal learning of many thousands ofconstructions and the frequency-biased abstraction of regularities within them.Literature studies have been made through the database from abroad and home,encompassing the theories and practices about the frequency effects. This papar concludesand analyzes the gathered materials to give a full description of how frequency effects inthe area of language acquisition. The whole article includes three major part: Firstly, ittends to look back to the developmental path of frequency effects of its highs and lows anddecribes the content of frequency effects. The second part brings together the empiricalstudies of input frequency and out frequency. The third part will presents a picture of theco-factors of frequency in language acquisition and summarizes several solutions to aid theteaching and learning a foreign language. This paper is a contribution to the literature oflanguage acquisition and the theories of language teaching and learning, and ends with alookout for the future direction of the relevant studies at home.
