As the classic of Christianity, the Bible has a significant influence on theformation and development of western cultural history. As for the translation of theBible, medio-transtatology attaches importance to the contribution and influence ofthe Bible on the world literature and culture in a broader scope of cultural exchanges.Bible translation in China is also an indispensable part of Chinese translation history.“Creative treason” derives from medio-transtatology. It is inevitable during theprocess of translation. Creative treason can be found even in the most faithful versionsof the Bible. Translators have conducted creative treason intentionally orunintentionally in their translation in order to make the Bible more acceptable to thepublic in a new social environment. Translators in modern China have paid greatattention to the translation of the Bible. They have adopted different forms that fit forChinese culture so as to make western culture and ideas better disseminated in China.It is rarely known that Yan Fu once participated in the translation of the Bible.Most scholars focus on the study of the history of Chinese Bible translation or Bibleversions that are well-known. The thesis conducts a detailed discussion on the firstfour chapters of Mark translated by Yan Fu in classical Chinese from both macro-leveland micro-level. It also discusses the value of Yan Fu’s Bible translation on ChineseBible translation. This is a new attempt to examine Chinese Bible translation. It alsoprovides scholars who are interested in Bible translation with a new angle anddirection to study.The thesis can be divided into six parts. The first part is the introduction of the dissertation. It introduces the background, the purpose and significance of the study,and the framework of the paper, literary review is also included. The second part givesa brief introduction to the Bible and Bible translation in China. The third part gives adetailed description of chapter1-4of Mark translated by Yan Fu and Yan Fu’s textview towards the Bible. The fourth part mainly discusses the background, definitionand causes of creative treason as well as its forms. Chapter Five explores Yan Fu’screative treason in his translation by analyzing typical examples from the perspectiveof creative treason. Chapter Six is the conclusion of the thesis and points out the valueof Yan Fu’s Bible translation and creative treason on the study of Bible translation.
