The topic of this thesis comes from a discussion in class during my postgraduate study in which we discussed the importance of literary translation. All of us believed that the foreign literary translation especially western literary translation had a far-reaching effect in Baihuawen Revolution and the Youth Revolution later. But at present, the literary translation is undergoing a colder and colder trend. Meanwhile, the quality of literary translation is making all the readers worried because some are good and some are bad. And I thought of the American novel Gone with the Wind that I was reading at that time and it was translated by Fu Donghua, and Fu Donghua’s version has experienced several decades but still favored by numerous readers.Generally speaking, any translation in essence is transmitting some information from one language to another. However, Literary Translation is more complicated than non-literary translation. It not only conveys the information and as a way of communication, but also gives the readers a sense of enjoyment while they are reading. As we all know that, different languages have their own connotations and characteristics, and totally many things are different and many barriers are needed to be overcome. Therefore, it is clear to see that literary translation is a kind of art, and it needs the translators’ creativity while they are translating, making creative treason become possible. So in order to overcome these language barriers and present the target readers a faithful translation as much as possible, the translators must make creative treason actively.The appearance of creative treason displays the intrinsic limitations of the translating activity. Many experts have considered the translators to be the slaves and shadows of the original writers for a long time, which is obviously wrong according to the present observations because it seriously ignored the translators’creativity. As a matter of fact, the translators must work hard to create a good version which is popular with the target readers. And the creative treason admits the creating efforts of the translators and the treason to a certain extent, of course it is mastered by the translators. So we can say it like this, the creative treason does not contradict the traditional translation principles.This thesis is to analyze some typical examples with Fu Donghua’s Chinese translation of Gone with the Wind, further pointing out that great literary translation can’t be produced without creative treason. In fact, we consider the creative treason to be an indispensable translating strategy in the translation practice.This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One is mainly the introduction. Chapter Two is the literary review, firstly, a brief introduction about Mitchell and her novel Gone with the Wind, then some introduction about the translator Fu Donghua and his translation of Gone with the Wind. After listing the main viewpoints about Fu Donghua’s translation of Gone with the Wind from other researchers, the author of this thesis puts forward his own viewpoint. Chapter Three is mainly about the creative treason in literary translation, including literary language, literary translation and the main features of literary translation. In Chapter Four, it demonstrates creative treason from the case study of Fu Donghua’s translation with some typical examples in a comparative way. After that, it obviously points out some basic characteristics of Fu Donghua’s translation Gone with the Wind. And the last chapter is a conclusion.
