Metaphor is omnipresent in language. Being a special and novel expression in language, proverbs involve metaphors with no exception. Many scholars believe that metaphor is based on similarity. However, being the representatives of studies on cognitive metaphor, Lakoff and Johnson pay more attention to similarity-creating metaphor than similarity-based metaphor. The law of widespread contact makes it a necessity that there are connections between the fully creative similarity-creating metaphors and proverbs of novel expressions. Nevertheless, how to prove these connections is a tough task, and the practical application of findings is especially a challenge. Up to now, there have been some scholars in China conducting researches on similarity-creating metaphor and proverbs in English writing, but only few of them did researches on the combination of similarity-creating metaphor and the translation of English and Chinese proverbs in English writing. In order to bridge the gap, similarity-creating metaphors in proverbs as well as the translation of English and Chinese proverbs are emphatically analyzed by the author after absorbing and referencing the studies on cognitive metaphors by ancient and modern researchers at home and abroad. The findings are applied to English proverbial writing so as to make it have proverbial features either in sentence or text and finally to achieve proverbial writing. Therefore, English writing in expressions can try to reach the goal of sense and simplicity, music melody, vividness and preciseness, unambiguous sentence structure, well-arranged and clear textual arrangement, and novelty. English proverbial writing is hoped to develop creative writing, to enrich English writing methods and to improve English writing.Analyses from the perspective of cognitive linguistics are conducted on the similarity-creating metaphors in the translation of English and Chinese proverbs by employing qualitative analysis and contrastive analysis. Meanwhile, strategies of description and interpretation, theories, and examples are simultaneously taken to expound the similarity-creating metaphors in the translation of English and Chinese proverbs. So the similarity-creating metaphors in the translation of English and Chinese proverbs are clearly presented and their features are reflected incisively and vividly in English proverbial writing. Finally, English proverbial writing is testified to be a new writing method and a creative writing. It can facilitate English writing to be a creative writing that is sensible and simple, smooth, precise and vivid, and fresh.Similarity-creating metaphor is an effective way to learn new things and to cultivate creativity. It is unconsciously beneficial, joyful, and interesting to analyze the similarity-creating metaphors in the translation of English and Chinese proverbs. Nevertheless, there are some weak points in this study, the expected effect of proverbial writing can’t be fulfilled, and English proverbial writing may be helpless in some special contexts wing to the short knowledge input such as the accumulation of proverbs, cultures, vocabularies and so on; so many influencing factors in knowledge processing like association, creativity, memory and so forth; and the difficulties in language output besides the author’s capabilities and the limitations of this paper. Hence, the author in the future learning and scientific research will continue to study similarity-creating metaphors in the translation of English and Chinese proverbs from the aspects of knowledge input, imagination, association and so on.
