On English Translation Of Song Ci-poetry From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

The thesis is mainly to analyze the English translation of Song Ci-poetry bytaking the English translation of Xin Qiji’s ci-poetry as example, and to analyze thedifferent translation strategies adopted by translators in accordance with the four ethicsin the process of translation from the perspective of Translation Ethics.As a kind of cultural exchange activity, translation is an ethical act, and its naturedetermines its needs for ethics guidance. As a kind of new translation theory, theTranslation Ethics theories started to be noted in the last80s. Scholars who devoted intoTranslation studies like Antoine Berman, Lawrence Venuti and Anthony Pym all havemade some contribution to this theory. Andrew Chesterman absorbed these scholars’views and then summed four ethical models of translation: the Ethics of Representation,the Ethics of Service, the Ethics of Communication and the Norm-based Ethics.Ci-poetry is an ancient Chinese verse, and musicality is the essential attribute ofCi-poetry. Xin Qiji is a famous patriotic poet in Southern Song Dynasty. There are morethan six hundred Ci-poetries remained, and the strong patriotism is the basic content ofXin’s Ci-poetry. Even in nowadays, scholars at home and abroad pay much moreattention and research on ancient Chinese poetry. In order to let more and more foreignreaders who know little about Chinese ancient culture understand and accept Xin’sCi-poetry and obtain the sense of beauty, the accurate and vivid translation is required.This thesis will analyze the English translation of Xin Qiji’s Ci-poetry mainlyfrom Andrew Chesterman’s Translation Ethics Theory. Due to limited space and otherfactors, this thesis will mainly analyze several Xin Qiji’s Ci-poetries as case study fromthese two models: Ethics of Representation and Communication, aiming at opening abroader perspective of translation practice of Ci-poetry in Song Dynasty’s Englishtranslation and illustrating the necessity of Translation Ethics Theory in translationstudy and the positive guidance on translation practice.
