| The use of address terms is indispensable to human daily life, and the researcheson address terms are always important subjects for scholars home and abroad.However, researches from the perspective of pragmatics are not very comprehensive,which mainly focus on two aspects:1) textual criticism on the etymon andevolvement of a certain address term;2) studies on the difference of Chinese andwestern systems of addressing terms from cross-culture aspect. The researches ontranslation of address terms are not quite systematical, and the standard of thecriticism of the translation is not clear and definite. This thesis studies the translationof address terms from the perspective of interpersonal meaning with linguistictheories, and tries to establish another standard of address term translation.Hong Lou Meng is recognized as a great work that illustrates Chinese classicalliterature at its height. It is not only popular in China, where its story has been adaptedfor many art forms, but also has developed a wide readership and reputation overseas.The author Cao Xueqin created more than400characters in this novel, thus theinterpersonal relationships are complex and quite complete, which makes it greatmaterial of studying interpersonal relationships. So Hong Lou Meng is chosen as thestudy material.In this thesis, the interpersonal meaning is explained in detail, and address termsof Chinese and western countries are introduced systematically. Functional grammarbelieves that interpersonal function is one of the three meta functions of humanlanguage which can be fully reflected in address terms. Based on those theories andresearch fruits, this thesis analyses and compares the two translated versions of HongLou Meng, drawing the conclusion that the translatability of address terms is limitedand further puts forward some compensations and solutions. In a word, this thesisaims to do some study on the translation of address terms from a linguistic perspectiveand give some suggestions and solutions in the translation practice. |
