In ancient Athens, the pottery industry was a long history and importanthandicraft sector. Its rise was inseparable with the unique natural andgeographical environment in Athens. The geographical environment in Atticwhere Athens lay in provided the favorable conditions for the Athenianpottery industry’s rise; The rich and hight-quality clay resources providedthe necessary raw materials for its rise. The Athenian pottery developed intotrade specialty from the daily utensils with the development of the Athenianpottery industry. Pottery with wine and olive oil constituted the regionalspecialty in the Athens Polis. The Athenian pottery industry was closelyconnected with the Athens Polis. It produced a significant impact for theAthenian economy, politics and the arts.In economy, the pottery industry was one of the most importanthandicraft industry sectors, it was closed with other handicraft industries.We can have a better understanding on Athenian handicraft industry bystudying the Athenian pottery workshops and production. At the same time,the Athenian pottery industry provided the basics for the prosperity of thecommercial trade, and the prosperity of the commercial trade also stimulatedthe development of pottery industry. In politics, the pottery industrypromoted the formation of the Athenian democracy; Athenian democracyprovided a good political environment for the pottery industry’s flourish. Inthe arts, the pottery industry promoted the prosperity of Athenian potteryarts, and made the pottery form the different styles. In short, the potteryindustry was a indispensable handicraft sector in the city-state of Athens, itaffected the development of Athenian industry and commerce, promoted theformation of the Athenian democracy and the prosperity of arts.
