Research On Euphemism In Black Humor Discourse

Based on the theoretical framework of Euphemism, this paper tries to study the Euphemism in black humor discourse and is the combination of theory and application. The research mainly focuses upon the characteristics, social function and formation of Euphemism in black humor discourse, illustrated by the case of Forrest Gum written by Winston Groom.Currently, Euphemism has been applied to many different literary discourses. However, there are many domains to which this theory has not been applied, the black humor discourse being one of them. It is known that some scholars have studied literary discourse by Euphemism. Based on previous documents studies, this thesis tends to probe into a concrete field of Euphemism in literary works.Forrest Gump is a typical of postmodern black humor novels, has won the Pulitzer Prize, and its movie version has even won the world-renowned Oscar Award.The profound social moral and cultural connotation of Forrest Gump provide a good way for studying Euphemisms. In order to bridge these gaps the author proposes a new study way:The thesis attempts to conduct the analysis of the social function and formation Euphemism in the black humor discourse.The whole thesis is divided into five chapters. They are sequentially the introduction, the literature review, the theoretical framework, the holistic analysis and case studies on Euphemism in Forrest Gump and the conclusion. The whole thesis is conducted by the combination of qualitative method and quantitative method and the combination of analytic and systemic approach. The methodology ensures that the study of reliability and validity. Some tentative research findings have been discovered in this thesis:(1) It is found that Euphemisms widely exist in Forrest Gump, the black humor discourse is full of incomplete and incongruent expressions, this makes the Euphemism has also unique characteristics in black humor discourse.(2) It is found that Euphemism can be applied to analyze black humor discourse. And also it is proved that Euphemism is not only an important instrument for the packing of knowledge in standard written literary language, but also can be employed in black humor discourse, which is a special nonstandard written discourse.(3) The formation of Euphemism including phonetic device, lexical device, rhetorical devices, grammatical device. Through the case of study, Various forms of euphemism widely exist in black humor discourse.The social function of Euphemism including evasive function, expression of politeness function, cosmetic function, humor and satire function, defensive function, upgrading function. Through the case of study, the Euphemism in black humor discourse also have above the five kinds of social function.(4) This thesis further analyzes the social function and formation of Euphemism by analytic approach and systemic approach.At the same time, highlight in the black humor language effect and theme construction function.The thesis is the first attempt to analyze conducts the research on euphemism in the black humor discourse, which is of great theoretical and practical significance. Theoretically, this. research may enrich the application of Euphemism in black text and provide an empirical research space for Euphemism. Practically, this thesis provides a more concrete field for the research on Euphemism in literary works, especially postmodern black humor novels. From the perspective of literature, a new way to analyze and appreciate postmodern black humor novels is found. Decoding the application of Euphemism in Forrest Gump may help people appreciate the language of black humor discourse and deeply understand the connotation of its multiple themes.
