Pu Songling was a comprehensive writer on short stories of classic Chinese, while Lu Xun was the initiator as well as the summit on short stories of moderntimes. The article tries to do rather comprehensive parallel comparisons and studybetween the novels of the two writers. First of all, the suffering they had met withhad enormous influence in their writings. Sufferings drove them in literature writing, meanwhile providing them with important materials as well. Secondly, both of theirwritings care about intellectuals and females, differing a lot though. What PuSongling concerned most were the losers in Imperial Examinations andpoverty-stricken scholars, revealing sad feelings of his remorse., while Lu Xunfocused his enthusiasm on enlightening intelligentsia, thoroughly criticizing theirmental dehciency. On concerning females, Pu Songling, standing on the footing ofmale-centered chauvinism, expressed his sex ideals and modeled ideal females in hismind. Lu Xun had the new type moral outlook of equality between sexes, thoroughlyrevealing the sufferings females met with in feudalism society as well as placingdeep sympathy on them. Thirdly, some characteristics of writing arts in their novelsare to be discussed. When irony arts are concerned, the satire in the novels written byPu Songling is exposed much too directly, while too much connotation in Lu Xun’s.They both adopted irony techniques such as exaggeration, dramatic method andways of comparison. In plots, Pu Songling pursued queer content, havingcharacteristic of making the plots involved, while Lu Xun concerned more about theunderclass and psychopathy and makes the plots infirm and desalt. Either PuSongling or Lu Xun adopted the structure patterns such as cross section, longitudinalcutting type, double lines and mental structure. Most of Pu Songling’s novels are inthe structure of longitudinal cutting type with clear plots, but sometimes the structureof cross section are used unconsciously. In Lu Xun’s novels, the structure of crosssection is used consciously which has the effect of peeping one spot and know thewhole sceneries. In the selection of words, both of their writings are mixed up withclassical and vernacular writing, being very prominent in briefness and individuationof character language.
