Zhao Jiping, one of the most eminent composers in China, created many fine musical works known in Chinese families. His works are characterized by strong national flavor, contemporary spirits and his own personalities. He is acknowledged as the composer best representing Chinese national culture and western features and as a milestone in Chinese musical history. He is also a pioneer, who has successfully combined national and western musical elements.The material for the symphonic suite Qiao’s Grand Courtyard is, adapted from the TV series of the same title. After three years of attentive creation, the symphonic suite was completed in2007, which successfully gave the first performance by Chinese Ai lele Orchestra in Beijing Baoli Grand Theatre. The30-minutes-long work consists of six chapters, including Prelude, Resolution, Love, Way to Trading, Purgatory and Far-Away Journey, which depicted ordeal-filled life of Qiao Zhiyong, a Shanxi merchant of Qing dynasty and reflected the spirits of economy and industry, courtesy and honesty, good management and brave innovation. This is of momentous current significance.The symphonic suite is of rich national and local flavor. The materials including folk songs, small local operas, Pu operas and Jin operas were gathered by Zhao Jiping from local areas. The composer made the good use of national skills, like’same starting part with distinct ending’,’the same structure of the ending and the beginning followed’. There are also some music pattern as zhi, Gong, Jue and western ones; about harmonic, three-fold set, five-fold and the mix have the functions of colorful nature and its cooperation with melody, as the mode of suite is concerned, many parallel paragraphs and single trilogy are put into use; as for musical organs, the western and national organs are put together with solo, unison and chorus.The success of the symphonic suite of Qiao’s Grand Courtyard is another masterpiece in Chinese symphonic history, which laid a solid foundation for the excellent combination of national and western music, and has enhanced the Chinese national symphony.
