Lu Yao, a realist writer, died young at43. Sufferings had been accompanyinghim his whole lifetime. For life, he searched for the meaning in the counties and thecities, trying all fated sufferings; for works, he watched the miserable world withwarm tearful eyes and sought for life’s destination for all the ordinary people in theworld. In Lu Yao’s world, suffering is destined with survival and is an importantmeans of salvation. This dissertation, on the basis of the existing researches, tries tointerpret Lu Yao and his works from a religious cultural view, so as to find out newmeaning in a new context. This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter one interviews Yu Lao’s life and theexisting studies on him systematically. In chapter two, the common manner of modernwriters to illustrate religious cultures is presented firstly; then, the possible religiousinfluence of Shanbei and the rich religious cultural heritage on the writer arediscussed. Chapters three and four are the main body of this paper, with studies on LuYao’s life and his literary works from the viewpoint of religious culture as the mainpart, and with individual’s cognition to sufferings and the way the individual seekingfor his destination as the main points. Specifically, chapter three, from the viewpointsof his sufferings in childhood, adulthood, love and dying, manifests the writer’s activeexperience of suffering in real life and his attitude towards individual destination inhis miserable fugitive short life. While chapter four, based on his representatives—Life and An Ordinary World, quoting and commenting the choices made by thevarious characters created by Lu Yao’s ever-drifting male world andgoodness-pursuing female world, tries to interpret the writer’s deep understanding ofindividual destination in sufferings. Religious culture of Shanbei is complicated dueto its geographic characteristics. And no religious clues are easy to grasp in Lu Yao’swording. Besides, it is difficult to recognize the specific effect different religionsputting on the writer. Given all the above, the analysis will be carried out according todifferent periods and different characters from the viewpoint of Buddhist culture and Christian culture.Suffering is common for human being. Lu Yao, in his life and in his works, worships and interprets sufferings and tragedies all the time. Interpreting Lu Yao’sworks in terms of religious culture rather than religion, may prove to be useful andmeaningful.
