With the development of globalization and new communication technology thatforges China enhanced cooperation with foreign countries, the need for qualifiedinterpreters has sharply increased. Therefore, as a widely applied form of interpreting, consecutive interpreting is undoubtedly becoming more important. Studies which focuson the quality evaluation standard of consecutive interpreting have never ceased.Systemic Functional Linguistics, a branch of linguistics created by M.A.K. Halliday, surveys and analyzes languages more comprehensively with a different view to traditionallinguistics. After studying the quality evaluation of consecutive interpreting found inSystemic Functional Linguistics, we have discovered that we can set up a criterionevaluation system of our own on Functional Linguistics. In fact, the greater ourunderstanding of linguistics, the better the system functions. We think that, based onSystemic Functional Linguistics, the parameters for evaluating the quality of consecutiveinterpreting are: ideational meaning; interpersonal meaning; textual meaning and contextof discourse. These are the related factors required to evaluate the quality of consecutiveinterpreting. The thesis focuses on the construction of the quality evaluation model of consecutiveinterpreting. After reviewing and summarizing the present consecutive interpreting qualityevaluation, using the consecutive interpreting of the Systemic Functional Linguisticsmodel, we have been able to set up our evaluation model of consecutive interpreting basedon Functional Linguistics and can now effectively tackle consecutive interpreting. This is anew discovery in the study of consecutive interpreting. In theory, this is undoubtedly animprovement in the field of consecutive interpreting. However, in practice, this alsocontributes to the improvement of the quality we can expect from all interpreters. Thisthesis, with respect to the features, processes and factual needs of consecutive interpreting, strives to reasonably design the knowledge structure and quality level that requisite for allinterpreters should have from the standpoint of linguistics, and for the higher workingstandards of interpreters going forward. There are also shortcomings in this thesis. For example, the analysis in the textual areaof consecutive interpreting is tentative. Therefore, we acknowledge the need for furtherresearches in this field. Furthermore, the analysis pattern of consecutive interpreting found in the model of Systemic Functional Linguistics comes with a certain amount ofcomplexity, and the analysis work for each parameter is a labor-intensive undertaking. As aresult, the workload increases exponentially. Consequently, this thesis can, at the very least, may serve as a reference for future researchers who wish to formulate an effectiveevaluation criterion to set the standard of quality for consecutive interpreting.
