On Cohesion In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Systemic Functional Linguistics

When it comes to environmental pollution in recent years,the fashion industry is still one of the most polluting industries.Faced with accelerated resource consumption and environmental contamination,sustainable development has been urgently required.It is time for the entire fashion industry to transform from a promise to a concrete action.This simulation material is selected from the first report of the "Global Sustainable Fashion Online Summit" sponsored by WWD China.In the form of online forum,"Consumer Participation","Global Innovation and Cooperation",and "Design and Nature" are introduced to discuss the important topic,that is,"how to practice sustainable development in the fashion industry",and how to provide classic cases,successful experiences and action guides for both inside and outside the industry.The author conducted simulated consecutive interpretation of this report.Different from traditional linguistics in the past,Systemic Functional Linguistics created by Halliday is a branch of linguistics that makes a more extensive observation and analysis of language.Halliday regards language as a symbolic resource of meaning from the perspective of function.Any language behavior is the result of continuous choices made by language users from the multi-level network of language(欧阳倩华,2015:120-129).At the same time,meaning is a kind of potential,and the form and content in specific pragmatics are not all in one-to-one correspondence.Explicit and implicit phenomena in translation and interpreting are the formal characteristics of the target language in the process of expressing the source language information.They are different ways of presenting meaning,and they are the semantic choices made by the translator according to the discourse context and communicative intentions.Among them,the use of different cohesive means can make the target language logic more clear and complete.Hereby,starting from the metafunctions from Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics,namely ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function,the author attempts to explore the cohesion in English and Chinese at the textual level,and put forward the corresponding strategies.For example,should it correspond to the cohesive sequence of the original text and preserve the tone and voice so as to perform interpersonal function?Or whether the difference of theme and rheme in the textual function between English and Chinese languages affects the conveyance of meaning while interpreting,etc.By analyzing the typical problems in the conference interpreting,this report aims to explore the feasibility of Systemic Functional Linguistics in guiding English-Chinese consecutive interpreting.The author hopes to provide strategies for interpreters who may encounter similar problems in the future and enhance the interpreting quality.
