This thesis is to study the debates of “Neither good nor evil” between GuanZhidao and Gu Xiancheng. Four aspects are used to elucidate the problem:Ontology of Heart-mind and Nature, Practice of Morality, ClassicsInterpretation, and Discrimination between Confucianism and Buddhism. Thedebates of “nine significances” and “nine explanations” between Xu Fuyuan andZhou Rudeng are also illustrated for comparative reason. In conclusion, throughthe analysis, the significances of the debates of “Neither good nor evil” are to beshown in an objective perspective, as well as the position in history and itsevaluation.
