| The vernacular collections of short stories 《Yu Shi Ming Yan》,《Jing Shi TongYan》and《Xing Shi Heng Yan》,which compiled by Feng Meng-long,have a total of120stories, part from the scripts of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, part from the socialpicture of the late Ming dynasty. View the contents of his works, whether the oldpapers from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, or the new chapters, both have a strong“vulgar†feature on the selection of characters in the novel, the local customs andtraditions and the publicity of true humanity. Through the text, from the works of thematerial basis of the times, the spiritual atmosphere and the author’s subjective factors,we can find out the reality roots of the “vulgar†content of the works. This paper is divided into two parts to elaborate this feature respectively:In Part One, I mainly sketch the contours of the text performance according to the“vulgar†contents of the works. First, in the selection of characters, all walks oflife, which work on the bottom of society, have a vivid character image display, especially the businessman, suppressed by the feudal ethics, play the role of shine inthe text.Meanwhile, the author gave full attention to female characters who worked onthe bottom of society, depicted different kinds of women images, especially theprostitute, who lived an oppressed and enslaved life in the traditional society, has arealistic depiction in the text. Secondly, on the secular customs, the works of art notonly show the race to the luxury with the description of the community people life intheir clothing, accessories, food, shelter, etc, but also has the individual details ofpeople’s life such as the worship prayer, dinners and other habits to be present,to describe the real people and their real living. Thirdly, as to theexpression on the subject, the work focuses on people’s character andmental demands through their performance in the production and living, highlighting the practical needs of human desire, which convey the admitto human desires, publicize the progressive ideas of human nature. In Part Two, I mainly discuss the reality roots of the “vulgar†content of the works.First, the economic prosperity of the town brought a profound effect to people’s lives. The developed market economic brought a lot of material wealth to people, providedthe possibility to their pursuit of extravagant materialism, and also led to all kinds ofbehavior just as chasing fame and fortune in the financial life. Meanwhile, the fluxionof wealth also greatly changed people’s concept of employment, profit, which wasdisdained by the traditional ritual, had become the legitimate business move in the reality life. In the wave of market economy, people are thinking and behavior had aqualitative variation. In addition, the development and prosperity of the townseconomic gave birth to the rise of various occupations, provided the conditions andopportunities for different types of people’s communication.Secondly, the evolution ofthe social environment also stimulated the people’s thought and life mutation. Theextravagance of the ruling class directly caused the bad change of social morals, thedarkness of the political domination and the critical situation of the State Council madethe public more concern about their real life. At this point, the rise of Wang Thoughtsand the spread of Li Zhi Ideas, directly gave the people the spirit power, so their boldpursuit of material things and the enjoyment of the flesh, all reflected the worldly lifeof primitive people. In addition, the author choose the townspeople as the maincharacter, portrayed the details of their real life, showed the respect and the publicityto human nature, his life experiences and ideas of the state played a decisive role. Hisfamiliarity with the underlying people’s lives, gave him a wealth of materialpreparation. Affected by Li Zhi Ideas, he could pay attention to the details of people’slives, be willing to recognize the proper status of human desire, while his own “loveeducation†idea made him give an real and rich account of the true social life, inorder to achieve the enlightenment purpose. |
