The Biography of the Hero and Heroine, written by Wen Kang, a Man nationalitywriter, is a Chivalrous novel of Daoguang reign, Qing dynasty. The author’s intention towrite is to reveal feudal ethics and the traditional virtues and only by adhering these onescan one eventually get the happiness of a family life. It can be said the Chivalrous storyis a overall of the novel, and education is its soul. Modern researchers are attaching muchimportance to the ideological standard and its level of art. And there are always approvaland derogatory remarks about it, but this is not the focus of the discussion. What thethesis wants to focuses is the development of Chinese chivalrous novels.Compared to modern and ancient chivalrous arts, the most obvious change in thenovel is the transition of "ruthless" to "affectionate" emotions: in modern chivalrousnovels, the description of love stories between the hero and heroine rested on the samestatus as the chivalrous story itself, but their beginning is the change of The Biography ofthe Hero and Heroine, the transitional point of development from Chinese traditionalchivalrous arts to romantic chivalrous novels. In order to clearly explain it, the thesisadopts methods of literature study, interdisciplinary research, experiences summary andcomparative research, to study the "affection" appeared in The Biography of the Heroand Heroine. The thesis shall summary the reasons and types of “affection”, to analyzethe causes of the breakthrough of “affection” in the novel, as well as its reference andlearning from other types of novels. The author will also place The Biography of theHero and Heroine in the process developments, and study “affection” from a macroperspective, in order to grasp the “affection” development in chivalrous novels, and therole it played in the development.The thesis is composed of four Chapters. Chapter I briefly introduces current statusof the research; Chapter II describes the performance of types of “affection”; Chapter IIImainly analyzes the causes of “affection” and the methods of the author’s expression;Chapter IV makes a comparison between traditional chivalrous arts and modern romanticchivalrous novels to illustrate their differences and relationships, further explaining thetransitional point in development of Chinese martial novels from “ruthlessness” to“affectionateness”.
