Freedom is an eternal theme in literature. Since entering the capitalist society,the rapiddevelopment of modernity in western world brought a series change in ideology and culture,spirit of philosophy and the emotional cognitive. Mankind enters the new stage of awarenessof their own.The frequently emerging social issues make mankind reflect on their behaviorand consequences constantly and pay more attention to their spiritual world. Maugham usehis sharp strokes reflects human freedom in modern background.In Maugham’ mind,the meaning of freedom is not only escape from something but also asource of inner feelings. It includes the guaranteed of personality dignity,the full use ofIndividual initiative and selfless love of humanity.But In the context of modernity,Freedomlost its fundamental characteristics gradually and become a kind of egoism freedom.Maugham is based on the specific background surveys of human existence remind peoplefirmly grasp the premise of freedom in this cociaty which boundary has be unlimited expantedand warned people to grasp the premise of freedom, humanity.This paper is divided into three parts: preface, text, conclusion.The introduction part introduces Maugham ’s position in the history of literature.Overviews the study of work in domestic and Abroad. These studies mainly focus on theworks of the theme, characters, modernist factors etc. People pay a little attention on thefreedom theme of Maugham’s long novel.This article plans to analysis the freedom theme ofMaugham’s long novel in modern cultural context.The first chapter discusses the modernity’s influence to Maugham’s thoughts and hiscreation. At the same time, It clarifies and the relationship between the context of modernityand the theme of freedom.The second chapter analyzes the performance of the the Maugham’s freedom theme inthe text. Conveys the mining of the freedom by the works from the different perceptions ofthe hero,From breaking away shackles to aloof freedom,eventually find its way into the truemeaning of freedom in the difficult journey. At this point, Maugham completed the course ofpursuing his freedom. The third chapter is Maugham’s view of freedom and its causes. Maugham thinks thefreedom includes human dignity be guaranted and the initiative be exerted fully. At the sametime, the freedom of unlimited expansion of modern society can’t violate the nature ofhumanity, what make freedom and fraternity go together.Maugham grew up in both Englishand French culture and travelled in many countries of the East,This makes him thinkhumanity is the center of the concept of freedom under the specific background,the freedomof Maugham both have the cool-headed and humanity.The last section pointed out the ideological value of the works,they provided a positiveway of thinking for young people who was confused then and able to cause the reader’s ownreflection in the different period what make them go on seeking and reflecting and reach amore perfect life state.
