Being an art, film enriches the spiritual and cultural life of common people. It isa reflection of real life to some degree. Film dialogue is the vital way ofcommunication and exchange between or among characters. Then, through theanalysis of film dialogues, people could better understand characters’ personalities, thedeeper meaning film tends to convey, as well as the charm of language. Besides, withthe reform of English teaching, more and more English teachers start to take film as animportant method of English teaching and learning, thus applying it in class.Consequently, students increase their interest in English learning and improve theirEnglish in the process of appreciating and analyzing film dialogues.Grice’s Cooperative Principle was first proposed to the public in1967. Griceholds that people should be cooperative in communication; otherwise conversationsmay not be carried on. Yet Grice notes that people do not always express themselvesexplicitly. On the contrary, they tend to imply their real intentions implicitly byviolating the maxims of the Cooperative Principle. For the purpose of revealing theimplied meaning which is not directly conveyed in utterances, Grice further studied thepragmatic inferring of conversational implicature. The thesis analyzes the conversational implicatures of the dialogue in the seriesfilm Pirates of the Caribbean under the guidance of the theories of CooperativePrinciple and Conversational Implicature. Pirates of the Caribbean is a series offantasy-adventure films which consists of four films and is quite successful at the boxoffice. Due to the restricted way of obtaining the scripts of the four films, examplesanalyzed in the thesis are selected from the first three films of this series. The thesis reveals the conversational implicatures of the dialogues in Pirates ofthe Caribbean by violating each maxim of the Cooperative Principle so as to helpaudience better explore the inner world of characters, and the effect of violation of themaxims of the Cooperative Principle on the development of the plot of the series filmPirates of the Caribbean; and also to help English learners get access to the latestcorpus as well as develop their English proficiency simultaneously.
