American linguist philosopher Grice believes that in all the languagecommunication activities, in order to achieve a specific goal, there is a tacitunderstanding between speakers and hearers; and both sides should abide by theprinciple, that is Cooperative Principle. Only obey the Cooperative Principle, thecommunication between both sides can go smoothly. The Cooperative Principle alsoincludes: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance and themaxim of manner. Each maxim below also has one to four maxims respectively. The relationship between the Cooperative Principle and ConversationalImplicature is inseparable. Grice puts forward that is because when people are talkingwith each other, they often deliberately violate one of the maxim in compliance withthe Cooperative Principle under the premise. He believes that when a maxim criterionis violated, only hearer thinks the speaker is willing to work with him, and sharedknowledge related to the presence of each other, so the hearer will over the wordsliteral meaning according to the time of the context to infer the deep meaning of theother words, this leads to the generation of "Conversational Implicature".(Grice,1967)In recent years, a variety of subjects American TV series emerge in endlessly. Itis becoming more and more popular among Chinese audiences, because most of theTV drama is the real life of people as a background, especially popular with youngpeople. In2013, the American TV series “House of Cards (I)” in the globalsynchronization premiere on Netflix website. This TV series makes the United Statesgovernment as the background; tells about a ruthless congressman and his wife who isambitious like him, using the power to operate the politics affairs in the White Housein Washington. The protagonists Francis is the U.S. House of Representativesmajority whip, who is a sophisticated professional politician. He believes that thenewly elected President of the United States and its staff had betrayed him, and hevows to oust the President, and he launches a series of deployment by hook or bycrook. This makes the plot ups and downs and at the same time the dialogue between characters is also very characteristic. With increasingly high degree of attention of American TV dramas in China, many linguistic researchers begin to analyze different drama dialogues with differentlanguage theories. From the existing literatures we can see that there are a lot ofarticles research on the dialogues in the American TV series from the aspect ofviolating the Cooperative Principles of Pragmatics. But there’s no literature of theanalysis of the dialogues in TV series “House of Cards (I)” from the perspective ofpragmatics. The author focuses on the application of Grice’s Cooperative Principletheory and Conversational Implicature theory, analyzes the well chosen dialogues from“House of Cards (I)” and classifies these examples according to the violation ofCooperative Principle in four different forms of maxims. The roles of the series byviolating the Cooperative Principle pass out the true intent and implicature. Byanalyzing these selected examples, we can deeply understand the deeper meaningbehind the dialogues. To better understand the character, and have a betterunderstanding of plot development and the theme. The main methodology of this study is description, explanation and qualitativeanalysis. The thesis analyzes the Conversational Implicatures of the well chosendialogues in the “House of Cards (I)”. Due to restrictions of the corpus, this paperanalyzes the dialogues come from the “House of Cards (I)“of the first season. Incase study, the author analyzes the every maxims of violating the CooperativePrinciple, aims to help the readers better understand the characteristic of the characterand the development of the plot. And at the same time, the author also hope to helpreaders better understand the Grice’s Cooperative Principle and ConversationalImplicature.
