The twentieth century witnesses the diversification of the translation studies. The traditional translation study from the perspective of linguistics has been gradually replaced by the translation cultural school. More people look at translation from a brand-new perspective:people shift their eyes from a microscopical way of word-to-word, sentence-to-sentence or paragraph-to-paragraph translation studies to a macroscopical way in which translation is considered and valued in the social, cultural and historical context. This kind of trend is called the "cultural turn".In this circumstance, Andre Lefevere, as the representative of the manipulation school, placed the translation study in the cultural context. He proposed the rewriting theory and the concepts of "seed transplantation" and "the circulation of cultural capital", providing a new perspective for the translation study. As to rewriting theory, it stresses the manipulation of the related constraint factors—ideology, professional, patronage and dominant poetics—on the translation activity. Rewriting is manipulation, undertaken in the service of power."Seed transplantation" can introduce and transplant new concepts, new genres and new devices, etc.;"the circulation of cultural capital" is of literary innovation, of the shaping power of one culture upon another.China is a country of poetry. Chinese classical poetry is the marrow of Chinese classical literature, the crystallization of Chinese classical culture and the miracle of Chinese civilization. The English translation of Chinese classical poetry is one crucial way to introduce and spread Chinese traditional culture and it is of vital significance to promote the communication between China and other nations. Nowadays, the research of translation of Chinese classical poetry is on the stage of "All schools of thoughts contend for attention." Different researchers from various standpoints research on different areas, put forward various translation theories and have a large number of translation practices. In this case, the writer of this thesis attempts to make a detailed study on the English translation of Chinese classical poetry from the perspective of Lefevere’s rewriting theory and the concepts of "seed transplantation" and "the circulation of cultural capital". Through the thorough exploration of relationship between the changes of English dominant poetics and English translation strategy of Chinese classical poetry in light of Andre Lefevere’literary translation theory, the author tries to justify the following two viewpoints:First, the changes of English dominant poetics have the apparent manipulation on the translation strategy; the professional and patronage of the translation activity and the ideology of the target language have the potential manipulation on the choice of text and on the translation strategy by exerting influence on the dominant poetics of the target language.Second, by translation, the Chinese cultural elements implicating in the Chinese classical poetry, especially the poetics of Chinese classical poetry, enter into western world and further affect the innovations of English dominant poetics and translation strategies; and the other way round, the innovations of English dominant poetics influenced by Chinese classical poetry affect the translation of Chinese classical poetry.This research is to take history as a mirror, throw away a brick in order to get a gem and enlighten the future innovations in the area of English translation of Chinese classical poetry.
