Cultural exchange between China and Canada started in1880s, when Canadian protestant missionaries’ began to conduct their mission in China. During that time, the primary schools, middle schools and universities they set up in China casted the great impact on the modern China’s education and medical science. Later on, Canadian missionaries’ role in China had been decreased and ceased soon after the establishment of People’s Republic of China in1949, and thereafter, the official cultural exchange activities were scarcely seen until China and Canada established their diplomatic relations in1970. In the year of1973, Canadian Premier Pierre Elliott Trudeau first visited China and signed the "Canada-China Student Exchange" agreement with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, which was renamed as "Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program "(CCSEP in brief) in1989. CCSEP is the top ranking official cultural exchange program between China and Canada, which has trained and turned out a great number of senior-level scholars for China and Canada and undoubtedly enhanced the mutual understanding between China and Canada. The development of CCSEP is interrelated with China’s Canadian Studies, the publications of China CCSEP scholars reflect the history and current status of China’s Canadian studies. This thesis is an empirical study basing on China CCSEP scholars to identify the relationship between CCSEP and China Canadian studies.
