Elwyn Brooks (E. B.)White (July11,1899-October1,1985) was an American writer,best known as the author of children’s books Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little.Charlotte’s Web describes a story about a spider who saves a pig’s life. The novel describeshow a girl tries to save a little pig and then how all the animals on the farm actually areinfluenced by a spider who contributes her life to saving the pig and thereof exposes thetheme of love and friendship when facing the knot of death and life.This thesis explores the writing skill from the perspective of exploring thecharacteristics of children’s literature. It consists of three chapters besides introduction.Chapter one discusses the use of allegory. It concludes allegorical character, allegoricalplots and allegorical settings. Chapter two is about the interweaving of realism with fantasy.The prominent characteristic is that realistic setting interweaves with cartoon figures, theuse of personification and the children’s humor. Chapter three studies the preaching ofmoral and social conscience based on the previous writing skills. The immortal love andfriendship is the upmost theme. It deals with the value of psychological growth of children.Also it reveals the angle of viewing the life and death in the eyes of children.This thesis is aimed to illustrate the characteristics of the novel from the perspective ofchildren’s literature. E. B. White employs his own writing style of portraying the beauty ofthe children’s literature and more importantly, he interprets a moving story in an ingeniousand unexpected way. Meanwhile this thesis lays much emphasis on White’s satire towardthe human being and the materialistic society through a perfect animal world. It is notexaggerating to say that the satire fills in every typical scene that always warns peoplesomething that is ignored in their worldly life. So the paper indicates more about the needfor people to be harmonious with the nature and to pay more attention to their natural soul.The story is simple but what the story reveals is so thoughtful: human being should learnsomething from the animal.
