Along with the rapid development of Beijing city, the construction of its metro system has been in full swing. What have the Beijing metro murals experienced? What is the current setting situation? What is the quantity and how large is the scale? What are the topics? What are the characteristics of the modeling language and expression patterns? What kind of attitudes do the public have towards these works? All these questions will be answered in this paper. Through the field survey on Beijing metro murals, and based on the first-hand information, this paper aims to clarify their emergence and development process, sort and summarize according to the theme, styling, formal language, material and technics, etc., analyze the relationship between the murals and environment space from the perspective of public art, explore its public nature and public effect through a questionnaire survey, and investigate their cultural function and related problems. These attempts result in a systematical and in-depth report on the current situation of Beijing metro murals, which would provide the decision makers, organizers, designers and administrators with some useful insights, and contribute to promoting the positive development of the industry in the future.
